Konami In Partnership With J.League Announced New Esports Tournament

The Japanese professional football league J.League announced on Friday the launch of an Esports tournament together with Konami Digital Entertainment Co. The tournament will feature Konami’s football franchise, Pro Evolution Soccer (PES).

The J.League has 40 clubs and each club top two divisions will field three players each to compete on the tournament. The three competitors will play on the mobile app version of the game.

Pro Evolution Soccer, a football simulation game known as Winning Eleven, has accumulated more than 150 million downloads worldwide. It is was one of the six titles part of a demonstration sport last year in the Asia Games celebrated in Indonesia.


The tournament will start the qualification rounds on March 22nd to select the representatives of each club and will culminate on a two-day tournament taking place From July 14th to 15th.

Konami had also expanded to other Leagues in the past by launching an Esports competition with Nippon Professional Baseball.

Nowadays, Esports has become a billion dollar industry and its expected to see other industries wanting to take part in this growing trend and attract a younger audience. If this tournament is well received, this could mean that Japan is finally opening the doors to Esports audience and players.
